Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian
Details
The Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian, also known as Lipa Cathedral, is a stunning Neo-Renaissance structure in Lipa, Batangas. As the seat of the Archdiocese of Lipa, it has been a spiritual cornerstone since becoming the diocese's seat in 1910, as designated by Pope Pius X.
Originally administered by the Augustinians as the “Convento de San Sebastián en Comintang” since 1605, the first church was made of light materials and was destroyed by Taal Volcano's eruption. Through the dedicated efforts of the Augustinians and the local community, the present church was completed in 1790. Known for its spacious design and sturdy construction, it features whitewashed stone walls and a beautifully painted wooden ceiling.
Visitors to Lipa Cathedral can appreciate not only its architectural beauty but also the rich history and resilience of the Lipeños, making it a significant landmark in the region.
